Pre-Festival Thoughts:
For the most part I enjoy The Lumineer's music and, from what I can recall from Firefly 2014, they're a great band to watch as well.
Excellent: Flowers in Your Hair {2} [*]; Classy Girls {3}; Stubborn Love {3} [I focused on the lyrics today and I like the song more for it];
Above Average: Ho Hey [Sometimes excellent, and sometimes I get tired of this song]; Dead Sea;
Slightly Above Average: Ain't Nobody's Problem; Flapper Girl [gradually hooked me in, interesting feeling];
On the Fence: Submarines; Charlie Boy [I like the song's music and rhythm]; Big Parade;
Slightly Below Average: Darlene;
*The phrase "flowers in your hair" has been used in several songs. I've also once used the phrase.
Setlist:
1) Sleep on the Floor [SAA]
2) Cleopatra [SAA] -- cellist provides back-up vocals --- "...a place for the end" sounded like "...a place for you."
3) Flowers in Your Hair [E3]
4) Ho Hey -- sometimes I like this song a lot and sometimes not so much; it ranges from [SAA] to [E2]
5) Classy Girls [E2] -- is that a mandolin?; it has 8 strings
6) Dead Sea [SAA] or [AA]
7) Charlie Boy [SAA] -- the cello makes this song; I love the solo kick drum
8) Where the Skies Are Blue [AA]
9) Scotland [SAA]
10) Ophelia [SAA] --- haha, "Oh, Ophelia" sounded like either "uh uh beady eyes" or "uh uh needy eyes"
11) Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan Cover) [E2] -- I first gave it an [SAA] but then thought the live performance was kind of neat and moved it to [E2]
12) Slow It Down [E2] -- lead singer sings this one solo; eventually adds a kick drum to his vocals; eventually the percussionist comes in and adds some drums
-- the entire band returns
13) Gun Song [SAA]
14) In the Light [SAA]
15) Angela [SAA]
16) Big Parade [AA] -- at one point, there's a long pause before the band starts back up
17) My Eyes [SAA] -- acoustic guitar; fingerpicks and strums with thumb; completed with percussionist on piano
18) Submarines [E2] -- lead singer starts solo on piano
19) Flapper Girl [E6]
20) Stubborn Love [E5]
Post-Festival Thoughts:
More familiar with their first album, The Lumineers (2012), I probably didn't enjoy their show as much as I could have. In addition, coming from Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, I was quite far back, and I had decided that making my way closer than I was would be more trouble than it'd be worth.
However, even though I didn't know every song by heart, I was at least there to put my full attention to the music. Being further back, I was subject to a lot of external crowd noise. Thus, in hindsight, I should have moved further up.
Note that there are situations where people should be further back, but this was not one of those cases.
The Lumineers (2012)
Excellent: Flowers in Your Hair {3}; Classy Girls {3}; Slow It Down {2}; Stubborn Love {2}; Flapper Girl {2}; Slow It Down (Live) ((DE)) {2};
Above Average: Dead Sea; Ho Hey; Big Parade; Charlie Boy [this slightly depends on my mood, it's a slow song so generally SAA, but it's a good song]; This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) (Talking Heads cover) ((DE)); Darlene [slow, but good];
Slightly Above Average: Submarines; Morning Song; Ain't Nobody's Problem ((DE)); Elouise;
((DE)) = Deluxe Edition (2013)
Cleopatra (2016)
Above Average: Ophelia; Angela; In the Light [this song is slow, but the way the guitar complements the lyrics and the entire pace is just sweet]; Patience; White Lie ((DE)); Cleopatra (Acoustic Demo) ((DE));
Slightly Above Average: Sleep on the Floor; Cleopatra; Gun Song [probably an AA after more listens]; Gale Song; Long Way from Home [also probably an AA with more listens]; Sick in the Head; My Eyes; Where the Skies Are Blues ((DE)); Everyone Requires a Plan ((DE));
((DE)) = Deluxe Edition (2016)
On the Fence: Scotland;
