Buddy Guy - BottleRock 2016

Festival Plan: It would be a treat to see Buddy Guy. I'm putting this performance high on my list of shows to watch.

*Added "Purple Haze," "Love Her With a Feeling," "Sunshine of Your Love," "Strange Brew," and "Meet Me in Chicago" plus corrections for "Chicken Head" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" on 20160602.

Pre-Festival Thoughts:
While I infrequently listen to blues, I definitely enjoy it. In particular, I have enjoyed Buddy Guy's work from time to time.

Born to Play Guitar
Excellent: Wear You Out - Billy Gibbons {2}; (Baby) You Got What It Takes - Joss Stone {2};

Above Average: Born to Play Guitar; Whiskey, Beer & Wine; Flesh & Bone (Dedicated to B.B. King) - Van Morrison; Crying Out of One Eye; Turn Me Wild; Smarter Than I Was;
Slightly Above Average: Back Up Mama; Too Late - Kim Wilson; Kiss Me Quick - Kim Wilson; Thick Like Mississippi Mud; Come Back Muddy;
On the Fence: Crazy World;

Excellent: Skin Deep - Live {2} [Nice and slow pace, different from most his other songs]

Above Average: Damn Right I Got The Blues - Live; Born to Play Guitar; Strange Brew; Voodoo Child (Slight Return)/Sunshine of Your Love - Live; Meet Me in Chicago;
Slightly Above Average: I Just Want to Make Love to You/Chicken Heads - Live; (I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man [*]; She's Nineteen Years Old; Hoodoo Man Blues; Love Her With A Feeling; Someone Else Is Steppin' In (Slippin' Out, Slippin' In);

*Has something to do with Hoodoo and gypsies.

Setlist:
1) Damn Right I've Got the Blues -- soooo awesome!
2) Five Long Years (Eddie Boyd cover) [E2] -- the guitarist comes in for a solo; near the end of the song or so, Budy Guy jokes "I didn't write the song."
3) I Just Want to Make Love to You / Purple Haze (Willie Dixon, Jimi Hendrix cover) [E2] -- the first time he got to "I Just Want..." he paused and the audience cleanly completed it; he transitions to the opening measure of Purple Haze with a couple of bars; I recognized the tune, but didn't recall that it was "Purple Haze" until after the show

4) Crazy 'Bout You / Chicken Heads [E2]
5) (I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man (Willie Dixon cover)* [E2] -- during this song, he paused before "son of a gun" and the response (unlike with "I Just Want to Make Love to You") was weak. at that point, he begins telling the audience (the back-up guitarists are still playing) that he was just in Tokyo where they were able to complete it and we just fucked it up. he continues saying he expects better now that he's home. he has the crowd try again.

6) Love Her with a Feeling -- I have no doubt that he sang this song, but I don't know where he played it. I distinctly remember him singing both "she kinda big and fat | and what I like about that woman | she kinda good like that" and "one leg in the east | one leg in the west | I'm right down the middle | trying to do my best"
-- Buddy Guy is messing around with his guitar near the VIP area (including a couple notes of Sunshine of Your Love)

9) Who's Making Love (Johnnie Taylor cover)
10) Sweet Sixteen (B.B. King cover) -- I wasn't able to catch the lyrics on this one...
11) Born to Play Guitar
12) Sister's Milking the Bull (Incomplete) -- "Sister went to milk, but she didn't know how. She grabbed a bull, instead of a cow. Mama, mama, come here quick. Sister milking the bull by the **pauses**."
13) Boom Boom (John Lee Hooker cover)

-- tells a story. part of the story involves not knowing what muddy water meant, cause he drank the creek water, eventually the story leads up to the next song:
14) Skin Deep
-- switches to an acoustic guitar
15) Ain't That Peculiar (Marvin Gaye cover) [AA]
16) What'd I Say (Ray Charles cover)

-- switches to a white electric guitar
17) Voodoo Child (Slight Return) / Sunshine of Your Love (Jimi Hendrix / Cream cover, respectively) -- part of Sunshine of Your Love is played behind his back
18) Strange Brew (Cream cover)
19) Let the Door Knob Hit Ya
-- throws picks, one by one, to the audience
20) Meet Me in Chicago [AA]

*It's possible he also did "She's Nineteen Years Old" here.

Post-Festival Thoughts:
Luckily for me, the choice to see Buddy Guy over Lenny Kravitz, Nothing But Thieves, and Grouplove was easy. Unfortunately, I occasionally felt out of place because there were people around me in the crowd who knew a lot of the songs which Buddy Guy performed. With that being said, at least I brought a strong appreciation for the music.

Overall, it was awesome seeing Buddy Guy perform. Not only is he an amazing musician, but he also an amazing entertainer. "Shit." Buddy has showmanship.

Among all the shows I saw on Friday, I'm leaning towards saying Buddy Guy's was the best.

On a different note, I was especially surprised that I was able to walk right up to a spot in the second row before the show started.

I remember asking myself, "Why isn't anybody here?" and I had to double-check that I was at the right stage. Honestly, Buddy Guy was about to perform!

Excellent: Damn Right I Got The Blues - Live (Live At Legends) {2}; Skin Deep {2} (Skin Deep); Voodoo Child (Slight Return)/Sunshine of Your Love (Live at Legends);

Above Average: Five Long Years (Buddy and the Juniors); I Just Want TO Make Love To You / Chicken Heads - Live (Live at Legends); Hoochie Coochie Man (Last Time Around -- Live at Legends); 74 Years Young (Living Proof)); Born to Play Guitar (Born to Play Guitar); Boom Boom / Strange Brew - Live (Live at Legends); Hoodoo Man Blues (Last Time Around -- Live at Legends);
Slightly Above Average: Crazy 'Bout You (Previously Unreleased) (The Complete Vanguard Recordings);
