First listen.
I think I like the original version better, but having Martina McBride is refreshing. I see that a solo version of "Blue Christmas" is the last track on the album. I'll have to compare the two directly.
After listening to the album, I listened to both versions of "Blue Christmas," with Martina McBride and without, and confirmed that I like the one without better.
I listened to the three songs I rated a "3" ("Here Comes...", "O Little Town...", and "Blue Christmas"). I moved "O Little Town..." to a "2" and "Blue Christmas to a "4".
4: "Blue Christmas";
3: "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)";
2: "I'll Be Home for Christmas" (with Carrie Underwood); "Winter Wonderland"; "Silent Night"; "O Little Town of Bethlehem"; "Santa Claus is Back in Town"; "Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me)";
1: "Blue Christmas" (with Martina McBride); "The First Noel"; "O Come, All Ye Faithfu"; "Merry Christmas Baby"; "I'll Be Home on Christmas Day";
0: "The Wonderful World of Christmas"; "Holly Leaves and Christmas Trees"; "White Christmas";
Summary:
The thoughts I have for this album are similar to the thoughts I made for the Bing Crosby album Merry Christmas
. In particular, in addition to the album's classic holiday track "Blue Christmas," I enjoyed the majority of this album. However, there were some tracks for which Elvis's musical style extends beyond my personal taste. As compared to the Bing Crosby album, which I rated a 4.8, I initially thought about giving the album the next rating down, but then decided that it should get the same 4.8 out of 5.
Overall Rating: 4.8/5
Favorite Song: "Blue Christmas"
Second Favorite Song: "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)"
