First listen.
Interesting. For the number of times the lyrics "Young Dumb & Broke" is repeated, I still like this song. There are many songs which I dislike for their repetitiveness. What sets the song "Young Dumb & Broke" apart from the other songs? Listening to the chorus a couple of times, my best guess is that the repetitions have sufficient variation. At the simplest, we let "A" be "Young dumb" and let "B" be "Young, young dumb and broke." Then the verse is roughly "+A, B_up, A, B_down, A, B_up, C" where "+" is "While we're" and "C" is "Young dumb broke high school kids." Furthermore, it should be noted that the extra "young" in "B" cleverly sets apart its initial "Young, young dumb" from "A."
5: "Young Dumb & Broke";
4: None
3: "Location";
2: "American Teen"; "8TEEN"; "Let's Go";
1: "Another Sad Love Song"; "Saved"; "Coaster"; "Cold Blooded"; "Shot Down";
0: "Hopeless"; "Winter"; "Therapy"; "Keep Me"; "Angels";
Summary:
I enjoyed this album from start to finish. There were some songs which I rated as neutral ("0"), but mostly because I was trying to counter the possibility that I biasing myself towards highly rating the tracks and handing out a bunch of 1's. In other words, the "0"s and "1"s on this album are a strong grey area. Probably songs rated in that zone could have gone either way. Perhaps I'll try doing an independent listen a week from now and see how the ratings break down.
Overall Rating: 4.8/5
