Billboard Listing: Moana - Soundtrack - [below Original Motion Picture Soundtrack album cover]
Long before seeing Moana, I had heard "How Far I'll Go" a handful of times and I didn't feel strongly for it. While I didn't see Moana in theaters, I loved the movie when I finally saw it, and I loved hearing "How Far I'll Go" in context of the movie. I have since heard the album several times. In particular, my wife and I often play the album while spending time with our son.
Released 20161119.

~Disc 1~
I like "An Innocent Warrior" in the film because of the visuals that accompany it, but on it's not as great. I like it less than "Tulou Tagaloa."
What makes "Where You Are" is hearing the voice of toddlerMoana (Louise Bush). [Toddler Moana says three words ("I wanna see") and a slightly older Moana says four words ("And no one leaves").]
I'll tentatively give "How Far I'll Go" a "3."
After listening to the reprise, I bumped the main song to a 4.
What I love about "You're Welcome" is how it matches what he's doing. Maui is literally spelling his intentions out.
Oh wow. I think this is the first time I've heard the pop version of "You're Welcome."
I'm not going to rate all the tracks 15 to 40.
I like "Sails to Te Fiti." It stood out to me.
While writing the summary, I realized I made a mistake and moved "An Innocent Warrior" from a "1" to a "6" and "Tulou Tagaloa" from a "1" to a "5." Drastic but necessary.
I also moved "Where You Are" from a "2" to a "4," because I realized it was the song with Gramma Tala's verse (Rachel House).
Songs in bold are the instrumental tracks (tracks 15 to 40) which stood out to me enough to rate
6: "An Innocent Warrior";
5: "Tulou Tagaloa";
4: "Where You Are"; "How Far I'll Go"; "Know Who You Are"; "How Far I'll Go" (Alessia Cara version);
3: "How Far I'll Go - Reprise"; "I Am Moana (Song of the Ancestors)"; "Sails to Te Fiti";
2: "We Know The Way"; "You're Welcome"; "Shiny"; "Logo Te Pate"; "You're Welcome" [pop version];
~Disc 2~
Wow. This is amazing. I like "More" more than "How Far I'll Go." Even as an outtake I can imagine how great it would have been as a song. I wish they recorded a version of it and animate it for the movie. [With that being said, the possible reasons for cutting the song and opting for "Where You Are" makes sense: Does anyone know why they cut the song, 'More'? (reddit.com)]
Same feelings towards "More - Reprise" relative to "How Far I'll Go - Reprise."
Hearing the demos of "You're Welcome" and "Shiny" show how much impact which the voices of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jemaine Clement add to their respective tracks.
I'm not going to rate all the tracks 8 to 19. But I should mention that that including the instrumental karaoke tracks for "How Far I'll Go" and "You're Welcome" is awesome!
6: "More" (outtake);
5: None
4: "More - Reprise" (outtake);
3: None
2: "Where You Are" (demo);
1: "You're Welcome" (demo); "Shiny" (demo);
0: None
-1: "Unstoppable" (outtake); "Warrior Face" (outtake);
Summary:
While writing this summary I was surprised how I absolutely enjoy this album and yet the song rating distribution was low relative to other albums I've listened to on this blog. In particular, I knew that one of the reasons I enjoyed the album was how it starts off - with "Tulou Tagaloa" and "Innocent Warrior." And yet I had originally given those songs a "1"!
As a bit of a surprise, my favorite song on the Deluxe album is "More." It was the first time I had heard the song, but I absolutely loved it.
Overall Rating (Standard w/o Score): 5.2/5
Favorite Song (Deluxe): "More" (outtake)
Favorite Song (Standard): "An Innocent Warrior"
20191112 Comment:
I've been meaning to note that I might actually like "Know Who You Are" best (out of all the tracks on the Standard version of the album).
